Hitachi Global Storage Technologies

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd., it is expected to be sold to Western Digital in third calendar quarter 2011. Hitachi GST developed hard disk drives, enterprise-class solid state drives, and external storage solutions and services used to store, preserve and manage the world’s most valued data. Founded as a merger of the hard drive businesses of IBM and Hitachi [1], Hitachi GST provided storage for a broad range of market segments, including Enterprise, Desktop, Mobile Computing, Consumer Electronics and Personal Storage.

In March 2011, Western Digital announced it would acquire the global storage unit of Hitachi, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, for $4.3 billion. In 2003, Hitachi had paid IBM $2.05 billion for its HDD business[2].
